Premier League title race: The key fixtures for Liverpool and Manchester City

The last international break of the season is now behind us, dwindling into the distance like an abandoned hitchhiker in the rearview mirror. Ahead, hurtling onwards like a runaway monster truck with a brick on the accelerator, the Premier League threatens to flatten all in its path as it roars towards its final destination: a title for one of Liverpool or Manchester City.

With seven and eight league fixtures to go respectively, neither Liverpool nor City can afford to slip up between now and the end of the campaign. Their run-ins are comparable in difficulty: both still have to contest two games against top-six sides and three against the bottom five. They also both have to face a top-10 team, with City hosting Leicester in their second-last game and Liverpool welcoming Wolves to Anfield on the final day of the season.

There are also subtle clues in their last handful of fixtures, however, which might point to where the Premier League title is headed come May.

First up, a quick reminder of the state of play at the top of the table. Liverpool are currently at the summit with 76 points, while C ity are two behind on 74:

Pep Guardiola's side have a game in hand, however, in the form of a massive showdown with Manchester United at Old Trafford on 24 April. City also currently have a goal difference of +58 to Liverpool's +52, giving them the advantage should the two sides contrive to finish on the same number of points.

The general consensus seems to be that the outcome of the Manchester derby will define the season. Should City lose, or indeed fail to win, Liverpool will be in a dominant position. Should City emerge victorious, their momentum could be unstoppable. That's the simple narrative, anyway, but let's look at the bigger picture.

In their three title-winning seasons since the start of the decade, City have consistently emerged on top in climactic showdowns at Old Trafford. In 2011-12, they famously thrashed United 6-1 at the Theatre of Dreams with Mario Balotelli – in the same week that a firework set his house on fire after it was set off in his bathroom – scoring twice and revealing his T-shirt which read: "Why Always Me?"

In 2013-14, under Manuel Pellegrini, City won 3-0 away to United in a game which helped to shred David Moyes' last scraps of credibility. Last season, as Guardiola and co won the title without breaking a sweat, City beat United 2-1 at Old Trafford in the depths of winter even if they did succumb to a surprise 3-2 defeat to their derby rivals at the Etihad later in the season.

Should City beat United on 24 April, then, history will be on their side in their battle to be crowned champions. The trip to Old Trafford does, admittedly, look to be their hardest remaining game and winning it would no doubt be a huge psychological boost, with City's only other match against a top-six team coming on 20 April when they host Tottenham.

Nonetheless, the idea that City's visit to Old Trafford is the be-all and end-all of their season might be a little misleading. Take their match against Spurs, for instance: City have only won one of their last three home games against Mauricio Pochettino's side in th e Premier League, making that look at least as tricky a proposition as the face-off between Guardiola and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

City face another deceptively tricky fixture away at Selhurst Park on 14 April, given that Crystal Palace inflicted a shock defeat on them at the Etihad back in December. Their penultimate game against Leicester could also be a metaphorical banana skin – City lost 2-1 at the King Power Stadium only four days after they lost to Palace – but the fact that City's games against Palace, Tottenham and United fall within 10 days of each other make that look like a hugely important week and a half.

Home comforts? Liverpool will contest four of their remaining seven games at Anfield (Getty Images)Liverpool will contest four of their remaining seven games at Anfield (Getty Images)

Liverpool, meanwhile, appear to have a slight edge over City when it comes to home advantage. Jurgen Klopp's side have four home games and three away games between now and the end of the season, while City have only three games at home and five on the road. City are also still in three competitions – the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup – to Liverpool's two.

Both of Liverpool's games against top-six sides will take place at Anfield, with Tottenham heading to Merseyside this weekend and Chelsea travelling up on 14 April. Liverpool have not lost at home to Spurs in the Premier League since May 2011, though Chelsea have had some notable successes at Anfield in recent years (not least the 2-0 win in April 2014 which saw Liverpool's last title challenge falter and featured Steven Gerrard's infamous slip).

Finally their year? Liverpool are blessed with the Premier League's form player in Sadio Mane (Getty Images)Liverpool are blessed with the Premier League's form player in Sadio Mane (Getty Images)

Given that Liverpool's only league defeat of the season came against City at the Etihad in January, they will go i nto all their other games with confidence. Their only marginal disadvantage compared to City is that their opponents have an average league position of 12th, while City's have an average position closer to 13th.

While Liverpool have a perfect record against Southampton, Cardiff, Huddersfield, Newcastle and Wolves in the league this season – with 10 goals scored against those sides and only one conceded – they did lose 2-1 to Wolves in the FA Cup, marking out that game as high-risk.

Coming on the final day of the season, with all the extra pressure that may bring, Wolves' visit to Anfield could be conclusive in more ways than one. Nuno Espirito Santo's men have already taken points off every other top-six side this term, beating Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester United in league and cup.

Bitter Jose Mourinho picks NO English teams to get into Champions League final including old club Man Utd

BITTER Jose Mourinho does not believe ANY of the remaining English sides in the Champions League have what it takes to make the final in Madrid.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea gaffer, 56, backs Barcelona and Juventus to battle it out for the "big ears" in June.

Jose Mourinho does not believe an English team will win the Champions League title this season

Half of the Champions League quarter-finalists are Premier League clubs following Liverpool, Manchester City, United and Tottenham's heroics in the knock-out stages this season.

Spurs and the Citizens glided past Bundesliga sides Borussia Dortmund and Schalke respectively, with Pep Guardiola's men drubbing their rivals 10-2 on aggregate.

Liverpool dumped out start-studded Bayern Munich, winning at Allianz Arena 3-1.

And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United spectacularly knocked out Paris Saint-Germain after overturning a two-goal deficit away from home as the first side in Champions League history to do so.

Meanwhile, Mourinho had led the Red Devils to a second-place finish in their group - resulting in the daunting round of 16 tie with the Ligue 1 champs - before being sacked by the Red Devils board in December.

But, still out of job, the Portuguese coach remains unfazed by the English teams' results this season and says none of them are experienced enough to get to the final at Wanda Metropolitano.

He told Calciomercato: "Favourites? I would say Juve and Barcelona.

"Everyone talks about Ronaldo and Messi – but I prefer to talk about Juve and Barca.

"The English teams, as well as Ajax and Porto, are good sides too but they don't have the same amount of experience.

"When you have Ronaldo or Messi, it certainly gives you a big plus."

Champions League quarter-finals will take place between April 9 and 10, with reverse fixtures being played the following week.

Fantasy Football Gameweek 30 tips: Who to pick for the tricky fixtures ahead you might miss

The snooker player Steve Davis once said that when trying to build up a break, he would always try to think three shots ahead. This week in fantasy football, you might be wise to do similar – albeit perhaps not quite so far into the future.

As we approach Gameweek 30, it's critical that you keep GW31 in mind if you decide to bring in any new additions into your fantasy squad – only 10 teams are playing, after all. GW31 fixtures include: Bournemouth vs Newcastle; Burnley vs Leicester; West Ham vs Huddersfield, Fulham vs Liverpool and Everton vs Chelsea

So on with the fixture-frisking. This week will include three player picks with ownership of 5% or less, who also have fixtures in the next two gameweeks...

    Ben Chilwell, Leicester (DF, £5.0m)

    Owned by: 2.5% • Fulham (GW30), Burnley (GW31)

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold offers excellent value at £5.5m, but at almost 20% ownership we have to look elsewhere to get our defensive pick for this week.

Team-mate Joe Gomez is reportedly close to a return and expected to be back for GW32 – so at 1% ownership and £4.8m, keep him in mind for the coming weeks as a cheap way into the Anfield side's defence.

All of this means that we have to look elsewhere for a defensive bargain ahead of this weekend. Former Liverpool manager, new Leicester boss and current Celtic object of dismay Brendan Rodgers made a losing start to his reign with a late 2-1 defeat at Watford. Thankfully for him, upcoming fixtures bode better.

Ricardo Pereira previously made this column but now sits with the cool kids at 14.1% ownership. Instead, team-mate Ben Chilwell has performed well this season and can add to his three assists, particularly if Rodgers has his full-backs pushing forward. The 22-year-old ticks all the boxes for this week.

    David Brooks, Bournemouth (MF, £5.0m)

    Owned by: 3.8% • Huddersfield (GW30), Newcastle (GW31)

One of Eddie Howe's best recent achievements at Bournemouth is the shrewd acquisition of David Brooks from Sheffield United for a reported £10m (rising to £11.5m). The 21-year-old Wales international has impressed this season in a Cherries team that has knocked four goals past a top-six club this campaign, and always shows willing going forwards.

Six goals and four assists is an impressive return for his debut season in the top flight. With Brooks back from injury and expected to be in the lineup for GW30, he's the perfect enabler to spend money elsewhere. £5.0m is a snip for the midfielder, and crucially, Bournemouth fall into the 50% of Premier League sides that actually have a match in GW31.

The impending return of Calum Wilson to this team also bodes well for the Brooks-Meister-General (it could catch on), given that they've linked up well throughout the season.

His midfield team-mate Ryan Fraser (£6.1m) is heavily owned in comparison at 20% of all FPL teams, and it feels like overkill to double up on Bournemouth midfielders. Both offer value going into GW 30/31, but Brooks can be the differential if that's what you need at this stage of the season.

    Gonzalo Higuain, Chelsea, (FW, £9.6m)

    Owned by: 4.2% • Wolves (GW30), Everton (GW31)

If you think featuring Higuain in consecutive previews is a bit of a cop-out, you'd be absolutely right. However, the criteria for selection is tight. Had Marko Arnautovic been expected to regain his starting berth at West Ham, the Austrian would have been looked at for selection – but despite not playing a full 90 since GW21, he's still owned by 7% of managers (that's over 436,000 teams).

Higuain bagged against Fulham in GW29, and should have scored more in that match. But the signs of improvement are there. He enjoyed a night off Europa League action at Stamford Bridge, sitting on his backside as heart-throb Olivier Giroud led the Blues' line instead.

Refreshed and ready for action, Chelsea face Wolves (GW30) and Everton (GW31) with Higuain sure to get chances. His ownership has now crept up to 4.2%, so it's probably the last time you'll see him in this column. A strong finish to the season could help Higuain get close to double figures, if he can build on his current record of three goals in five Premier League games so far at Chelsea.

Expert view: National football and hurling league predictions

Seán Moran Football1 Can/will anyone challenge Dublin?

Yes but not with the sort of consistency to depose them. Kerry showed two years ago however that in a once-off match it can happen.

2 Who needs more from the league - Mayo, Tyrone or Kerry?

Kerry have a new manager and promising underage talent. Peter Keane will hope to knock it into a bit of shape for the summer.

3 Outside Division 1, pick a team for whom a good league can lead on to better things in the summer.

Armagh have been able to restore Stefan Campbell and Jamie Clarke to the panel and with momentum can reach the All-Ireland quarter-finals as in 2017.

Hurling 4 With no promotion or relegation between 1A and 1B, will anyone be breaking a sweat at all?

No less than usual. Galway nearly did back-to-back All-Ireland breaking sweat in the league. Last year Limerick needed momentum more than promotion.

5 Pick a manager and name a problem the league can solve for him.

Brian Cody needs a full back to liberate Pádraig Walsh for more advanced duties. JJ Delaney says it's between Huw Lawlor and Conor Delaney.

Keith Duggan Football1 Can/will anyone challenge Dublin?

Last summer suggested the gap is lengthening, not closing. But if Tyrone continue to improve and Mayo can tap into their 2016/7 guise, those two counties can certainly challenge. The other contenders are wait-and-see.

2 Who needs more from the league – Mayo, Tyrone or Kerry.

Mayo have been blasé about the league in recent years and James Horan was never overly excited by it in his first term. But the league is their best chance of drafting a championship blueprint to sort out the problems that have dogged them.

3 Outside Division 1, pick a team for whom a good league can lead onto better things in the summer.

The obvious candidate is Donegal: the Ulster champions have a stacked managerial team, a young, talented squad and a prevailing sense of injustice about how the Super 8s worked out for them last year.

Hurling4 With no promotion or relegation between 1A and 1B, will anyone be breaking a sweat at all?

Limerick used a terrific win in Salthill last year as a springboard to their brilliant summer. Brian Cody has always stressed the importance of the league. Some teams will prioritise it more than others but it will have bite.

5 Pick a manager and name a problem the league can solve for him.

Liam Sheedy: Last year, Tipperary's loss of altitude was one of the stories of the summer. Identifying a championship full back and restoring Tipp's momentum will become part of his league agenda.

Malachy Clerkin Football1 Can/will anyone challenge Dublin?

Recent history would suggest not and yet the other teams are all turning up for training and matches nonetheless. Could see Tyrone or Monaghan in a league final against them with a puncher's chance.

2 Who needs more from the league – Mayo, Tyrone or Kerry?

Kerry, certainly. The other two must be reasonably sure of the bulk of their championship personnel but Peter Keane has a fairly clean slate to go to work on. Plenty of blanks to fill in.

3 Outside Division 1, pick a team for whom a good league can lead onto better things in the summer.

Donegal are a really exciting prospect and can build through the season. Playing a league without Michael Murphy and Patrick McBrearty would cripple them in Division One but might not do them any harm at all at the lower level.

Hurling4 With no promotion or relegation between 1A and 1B, will anyone be breaking a sweat at all?

Only in patches, if at all. Managers have spent too many recent leagues grousing about the madcap demands not to ease back on the throttle now. Summer is everything.

5 Pick a manager and name a problem the league can solve for him.

Padraic Fanning has taken over a panel in Waterford that had an almost umbilical relationship with their previous management. The next few months will be about finding his own route under their skins.

Jackie Tyrrell Hurling4 With no promotion or relegation between 1A and 1B, will anyone be breaking a sweat at all?

The league will still be intense because everyone wants to win and build confidence. But I would be certain that mangers will be willing to experiment with personnel and tactics a lot more this year than in other years.

5 Pick a manager and name a problem the league can solve for him.

I'll give you two. Tipp need a full back and Liam Sheedy could try Brian McGrath there. And in Clare, Donal Moloney and Gerry O'Connor are going to need Tony Kelly in the summer so maybe they might hold him back a bit. He's going too well for January!

Nicky English Hurling 4 With no promotion or relegation between 1A and 1B, will anyone be breaking a sweat at all?

The nature of the league changed after about two rounds last year when reality dawned that the provincial championship would be so demanding. The removal of promotion and relegation will increase the levels of panel deepening this year.

5 Pick a manager and name a problem the league can solve for him.

John Meyler found out to his cost in the All-Ireland semi-final against Limerick last year that his panel lacked depth. That's something that Cork need to rectify in the league if it isn't going to cost them again in the championship.

    Kevin McStay Football

    1 Can/will anyone challenge Dublin?

Tyrone and Kerry look best set because of ability, conditioning and above all, age profile. Nobody really knows what Mayo will do in the league other than be competitive. It's a big year for Galway, who must move clear of the chasing pack and into the top three.

2 Who needs more from the league – Mayo, Tyrone or Kerry

Kerry for sure need a big league, a real confidence-boosting league campaign to re-establish themselves as genuine contenders. They have the players road-tested at underage and this league should be used to get them used to Big Boys' School.

3 Outside of Division 1, pick a team for whom a good league can lead onto better things in the summer (and say why)

Armagh. Unlucky not to make Super 8's last year, they are showing steady progress these past few years and have better players this year. They have an excellent goalkeeper in Blaine Hughes and the return of James Morgan, Stefan Campbell and Jamie Clarke means they should/must emerge from Division Two.

Sky Sports Fantasy Football Popular Picks: Felipe Anderson and Raul Jimenez

    By Billy Lumsden

    Last Updated: 14/02/19 3:15pm

Raul Jimenez has impressed in his debut season

We take a look at the top five players who have been transferred into Fantasy Football sides, in line with recent performances and upcoming fixtures.

Change and select your Sky Sports Fantasy Football team

Looking at the last five appearances from each player, the stats reveal why they have made up the most transferred players in Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

    Sergio Aguero - £12.8m

The City talisman has two hat-tricks in three games

    Goals - 7Assists - 1MOTM awards - 2Points - 62Transferred in by - 9.46 per cent of Sky Sports Fantasy Football managers

    Raul Jimenez - £7.9m

Goals- 3Assists- 1MOTM awards- 1Points- 32Transferred in by- 6.86 per cent of Sky Sports Fantasy Football managers

Jimenez was the fourth highest selected captain from game week 27 but could only pick up two points against Newcastle. The Wolves forward has now been directly involved in 16 goals, creating seven and hitting nine himself, as well as earning three Sky Sports Man of the Match awards throughout the season. As well as this, Nuno Espirito Santo's side play Bournemouth, Huddersfield and Cardiff in their next three, which is why Fantasy Football managers may have drafted in his services for the Newcastle match and in order to keep him in their team during the Overhaul.

    Paul Pogba - £10.6m

Pogba has directly contributed to 13 goals in his last nine

Goals- 4Assists- 2MOTM awards- 1Points- 51Transferred in by- 6.08 per cent of Sky

    Heung-Min Son

Son now has 11 goals in 12 matches in all competitions

Goals- 4Assists- 1MOTM awards- 1Points- 37Transferred in by- 5.72 per cent of Sky Sports Fantasy Football managers

    Felipe Anderson

Goals- 0Assists- 1MOTM awards- 1Points- 20Transferred in by- 4.19 per cent of Sky Sports Fantasy Football managers

Many people may be surprised by the inclusion of Anderson at number five. Although he only has one goal in seven, the West Ham playmaker showcased what he can do as he grabbed an assist and an MOTM award in their fine display against Liverpool recently. he is the highest scoring player in Fantasy Football outside of the 'big six', which can be highlighted through his eight goals, four assists and four MOTM awards thus far.

Felipe Anderson has a generous run of fixtures coming up

Despite playing Manchester City in the double game week, Anderson has proven he can do it against the best, and the four games around this one includes fixtures against Fulham, Newcastle, Cardiff and Huddersfield - a great opportunity for the Brazilian to register a valuable amount of points.
